What is death?

Brother Edward Hovsepian Mehr gives a Biblical perspective on death. Answering many of the common misconceptions.

The sermon centers on 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 and Philippians 1:21, exploring the theological meaning of death in the wake of a recent tragedy. The preacher refutes common misconceptions of death as a mystery, a finality, or a mere escape, instead presenting five scriptural perspectives:

Transformation: Death is a transition from the earthly and perishable to the heavenly and imperishable (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).
Final Victory: It is not a defeat but the moment death is “swallowed up in victory” through Jesus Christ.
Gain: As Paul stated, “to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). It is the attainment of perfection and the full presence of God.
Sleep: Scripturally described as “falling asleep,” implying a guaranteed awakening and a “good morning” in eternity.
Eternal Presence: Entering the immediate, unceasing presence of God where no separation is possible (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Congregation response

Brother Edward challenges the congregation to live with “eternal alertness” rather than spiritual relaxation.

• Intentional Empathy: Pray earnestly for the hundreds of families grieving from the recent Thursday tragedy and for those still hospitalized or trapped.
• Spiritual Audit: If you had only one week to live, what would you change? The congregation is urged to: • Repent of unconfessed sins immediately. • Reconcile broken relationships and heal hearts they have wounded. • Pay off outstanding debts. • Replace spiritual laziness with diligent prayer and scripture reading.
• Witnessing: Urgently share the Gospel with neighbors and relatives, recognizing that “time is running out.”
• Detachment: Shift focus from earthly blessings and political hopes to the “heavenly things,” viewing oneself as a stranger in this world.
