Passing the test of success
Michael shares a message from the life of Nebuchadnezzar and the need to be humble and acknowledge God.
The sermon focuses on the Book of Daniel, specifically the life of King Nebuchadnezzar in chapters 2 and 4.
- Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of a great statue, which only Daniel could interpret. While this saved Daniel’s life, it fueled the King’s pride, leading him to build a golden image and demand worship.
- Daniel 4: A first-person account of the King’s second dream regarding a great tree. Daniel warns the King that his success and riches have led to arrogance. Because the King ignores the warning, he is humbled by God, losing his sanity and living like an animal until he acknowledges God’s sovereignty.
- Proverbs 16:5 & 14:21: The preacher highlights that the Lord detests the proud of heart and that it is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, while kindness to the needy honors God.
- Psalm 72:1-7: A prayer for a leader to be endowed with justice and righteousness, specifically to defend the afflicted and save the children of the needy.
Michael challenges the congregation to recognise that success is a dangerous “harpoon” that often leads to pride. The following actions are proposed:
- Practice Humility: Acknowledge that all brilliance, gifting, and achievements come from God’s grace, not personal merit.
- Beware of “I”: Note that the middle letter of both “Pride” and “Sin” is “I.” Shift focus from self-fulfillment to God’s pleasure.
- Serve the Voiceless: Use resources and influence to help the poor and those suffering from injustice.
- Speak Out: In light of recent social injustices and police brutality, individuals must act within their own communities rather than waiting for a charismatic leader to emerge.
- Pray for Influence, Not Luxury: Shift prayer requests from material gain (houses, cars) to seeking greater influence for the purpose of helping others.
