Why do we need to be filled by the Holy Spirit?

Nine times in the New Testament we see mention of the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit. This was a common occurrence in their lives.

In the book of Ephesians Paul exhorts us, don’t be filled with wine but be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Brother Edward outlines why we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit:

1. Without being filled with the Holy Spirit we would be weak and cowardly individuals.
2. Holy Spirit is a spirit of knowledge and revelation.
3. Without being filled with the Holy Spirit we will be individuals who are ignorant not knowing right from wrong.
4. Without the Holy Spirit, our relationships will not be right.
5. We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit because without being filled with the Holy Spirit we can not have good worship or effective prayer.

The sermon centers on Ephesians 5:18: “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” The preacher emphasizes that being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a suggestion but a divine command. He also references Acts of the Apostles, noting that the disciples were refilled at least nine times, suggesting that the “filling” is a continuous necessity for the believer’s daily life rather than a one-time event.

Brother Edward identifies five specific reasons why the congregation must seek the filling of the Holy Spirit:
Overcoming Fear: To move from cowardice (like Peter’s denial) to boldness in witnessing.
Gaining Revelation: To move from spiritual ignorance to understanding the “mysteries” of God and the person of Jesus.
Divine Guidance: To receive direction in life decisions (e.g., marriage, travel) rather than relying on “luck” or “fortune.”
Restoring Relationships: To replace jealousy and pride with the “one heart and one soul” unity seen in the early church.
Effective Prayer: To allow the Spirit to intercede when we do not know how or what to pray.

Action Points:

• Empty the Vessel: Confess and remove weaknesses or “fillings” that are not of God.
• Cleanse: Allow the blood of Jesus to purify the heart.
• Position for Filling: Remain “open-side up” in God’s presence, specifically asking the Holy Spirit to take control of daily prayer sessions.
