Expectations of the Lord

The sermon centers on the necessity of a firm spiritual foundation, drawing from several key scriptures:

• 1 Corinthians 3:11: Brother Edward emphasizes that there is no other foundation for a believer’s life except Jesus Christ, the rock.
• Psalm 103:7: A distinction is made between the Israelites, who only knew God’s “acts” (miracles and blessings), and Moses, who sought to know God’s “ways” and His person.
• Daniel 3: The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is used to illustrate unconditional faith. They declared that even if God did not save them from the fire, they would still not worship the idol, proving their devotion was to God Himself, not just His protection.
• Psalm 73: Brother Edward references Asaph’s shift from envying the worldly success of the wicked to finding total satisfaction in God’s presence, concluding that he desires nothing on earth besides Him.

Congregation response

Brother Edward challenges the congregation to audit their motives for following Christ. He asks whether they seek God for “fish and bread” (miracles and gifts) or for His person.

• Shift from Getting to Giving: Believers are urged to stop treating God as a means to an end and instead seek to give Him joy and satisfaction.
• The 50/10 Prayer Rule: The preacher encourages a disciplined prayer life where 50 minutes of an hour are spent in worship, meditation on God’s attributes, and intimacy, leaving only the final 10 minutes for personal petitions.
