Year of evangelism
Isaiah 6:1–8
Brother Edward examines the prophet Isaiah’s encounter with the Lord in the year King Uzziah died. Key elements include:
- The Vision of Sovereignty: Isaiah sees the Lord seated on a high and exalted throne, emphasizing that even when earthly kings (like Uzziah) pass away, God’s kingdom remains eternal and all-powerful.
- The Seraphim and Holiness: The presence of six-winged angels crying “Holy, Holy, Holy” illustrates a level of divine purity so intense that even heavenly beings must cover their faces and feet.
- The Personal Crisis: Confronted by this holiness, Isaiah recognizes his own “unclean lips” and the spiritual state of his people, leading to a cry of despair (“Woe to me!”).
- The Purifying Coal: A seraph touches Isaiah’s lips with a live coal from the altar, symbolizing the atonement of sin and the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit.
- The Divine Commission: Once cleansed, Isaiah’s ears are opened to hear God’s question, “Whom shall I send?” to which he responds, “Here am I. Send me.”
Congregation response
The preacher challenges the congregation to move beyond general repentance toward a personal, transformative encounter with God.
- Seek Personal Visitation: The congregation is urged to pray for a direct experience with God’s glory that brings both peace and a true understanding of one’s own spiritual condition.
- Sanctify the Senses: A specific call was made to keep “ears holy.” Participants are challenged to stop listening to gossip, negative news, and “bad reports,” and instead tune their ears to hear the “whisper of God.”
- Commitment to Growth: As part of the 2013 vision, the church is called to focus on both quality and quantity. Members are asked to move from being passive attendees to active participants in evangelism.
- Practical Step: The congregation is invited to a special gathering on January 6th (Armenian Christmas) to discuss practical, strategic steps for church growth and outreach in the local area.
