Relationship with the Holy Spirit

This week Brother Edward looks at our relationship with the Holy Spirit.

The sermon centers on the personality and role of the Holy Spirit, primarily referencing 2 Corinthians 13:14 regarding the “fellowship of the Holy Spirit” and Isaiah 11:2, which identifies the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of counsel. Brother Edward establishes that the Holy Spirit is not merely a force or an idea, but a distinct personality with a mind, will, and feelings. He argues that while believers often focus on what the Spirit does for them, they must consider how they treat the Spirit. The core of the message focuses on three foundational pillars of this relationship:
• Intimate Fellowship: A two-way “give and take” relationship characterized by honesty, comfort, and mutual listening, rather than one-sided prayer.

• Counseling and Respect: Honoring the Spirit by actively seeking His advice in all decisions, acknowledging that His counsel is solid and sure.

• Obedience: Moving beyond just hearing to actively following the Spirit’s lead. The preacher notes that God speaks most clearly to those He knows will obey.

Congregation response

The congregation is challenged to move from a “statue-like” or one-sided prayer life to a living, reciprocal friendship with the Holy Spirit.

• Practice Listening: Dedicate time to hear from God rather than just speaking to Him. The preacher asks, “When was the last time God spoke to you?”

• Seek Counsel First: Before making decisions (marriage, travel, work), explicitly ask the Holy Spirit for His advice as one would a best friend.

• Align Your Walk: Ensure you are following the Spirit’s lead rather than asking the Spirit to follow your own plans.

• Reflect on Past Obedience: Evaluate areas of life where disobedience led to regret and commit to the “spirit of obedience” to open the door for clearer divine communication.
