Obstacles to trusting the Lord
Edward Hovsepian continues on from last weeks sermon with a look at things that stop us from trusting the Lord.
The sermon centers on Hebrews 11:1, 6. Brother Edward defines faith not as a feeling, but as the “assurance of things hoped for” and the “conviction of things not seen.” He emphasizes that without faith, it is impossible to please God, as those who approach Him must believe both in His existence and His nature as a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Additional supporting texts include:
- 2 Corinthians 5:7: Walking by faith, not by sight.
- Proverbs 3:5: Trusting the Lord with all one’s heart rather than leaning on personal understanding.
- Ephesians 3:20: God’s ability to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
Brother Edward identifies three specific “stones” or obstacles that must be removed for the glory of God to be revealed in a believer’s life:
The Obstacle of Appearance: Reject the “I must see it to believe it” mentality. Like the Centurion or Abraham, believers are called to trust the promise even when the physical evidence (the “deadness” of circumstances) suggests otherwise.
The Obstacle of Emotions: Do not let “mercurial” feelings dictate spiritual commitment. The preacher challenges the congregation to pray, serve, and attend church specifically when they do not feel like it, asserting that true faith operates independently of mood.
The Obstacle of Intellect: Avoid limiting God to human logic or scientific understanding. While intellect is a gift, it must not be the foundation of faith.
Action Point: Participants were asked to physically place their hands on their eyes (for appearances), their hearts (for emotions), or their heads (for intellect) as a sign of surrendering these specific barriers to God for healing and intervention.
