Knowing God’s will – Part 1

Knowing God’s will in times of tragedy.

The characteristics of God’s will the constant and the changeable aspects and the difference between the two. Brother Edward also discusses what should our response be to these two aspects.

The sermon centers on Psalm 143:10: “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good spirit lead me on level ground.”

Brother Edward explores the dual nature of God’s will:

  • The Changeable Will: Aspects of God’s plan that may be altered through intercession, fasting, and repentance. Examples include Moses interceding for Israel, the repentance of Nineveh under Jonah, and the church praying for Peter’s release from prison (Acts 12).
  • The Unchanging (Perfect) Will: The sovereign purposes of God that remain fixed despite human plea. Examples include the death of David’s son (2 Samuel 12), Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” which remained despite three prayers (2 Corinthians 12), and Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane to remove the cup, which he ultimately drank in obedience.

Brother Edward challenges the congregation to move from resisting God to surrendering to His sovereignty.

  • Stop the Battle: Acknowledge that you are the created and He is the Creator. Opposing His will only leads to further hurt.
  • Differentiate Wills: Discern when to persist in prayer for change and when to accept a “no” as God’s perfect, albeit painful, plan.
  • Surrender Emotions: Recognize that feelings of love or fear can cloud spiritual prophecy, as seen when the church tried to stop Paul from going to Jerusalem.
  • Trust the Timing: Accept that God determines the “ripeness” of a soul. Whether at age 22 or 90, death occurs according to His schedule, not ours.
  • Action Point: Pray the prayer of Christ: “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
