Beatitudes – Part 5
Br. Charles continues the series on the beatitudes.

Message:
The sermon focuses on Matthew 5:13: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
Brother Charles links this verse to the preceding Beatitudes, noting that the Holy Spirit changes a believer from the inside out. This internal transformation results in a distinct character that the world may reject or persecute. The core points derived from the text include:
- Salt as a Preservative: In the ancient world, salt was primarily used to stop meat from rotting. Similarly, Christians are placed in the world to prevent moral and spiritual decay.
- The Reality of Decay: The world is described as being in a state of “rot” due to sin, descending from the perfection of creation (Genesis 1-2) into corruption (Genesis 3).
- Contact is Required: Just as salt must be rubbed into meat to preserve it, Christians must be “rubbed into the world” rather than isolating themselves in “spiritual corners.”
Brother Charles challenges the congregation to evaluate their “saltiness” and active engagement with society:
- Be Distinct: Christians must remain spiritual outside the church doors. If worldly people feel comfortable sharing “filthy jokes” or gossip with you, it indicates a loss of saltiness.
- Vocalize Truth: The congregation is urged to stand against corruption and speak the truth on moral issues (e.g., homosexuality, dishonesty, gossip), even at the risk of being unpopular or facing legal consequences.
- Create Thirst: Believers should live in a way that creates a “thirst for God” in others by demonstrating peace, joy, and constancy.
- Prioritize Prayer: Small prayer meetings are identified as the catalyst for historical revivals and are essential for changing the nation.
- Embrace the “Sting”: Recognize that speaking the truth may cause temporary pain (like salt in a wound), but it is the necessary first step toward healing and killing the “bacteria” of sin.
