Waiting rooms
Worship led by Joseph Hovsepian followed by a short message entitled Waiting rooms.
Worship & Message:
The sermon centers on Psalm 40:1-4. Brother Joseph explores the profound depth of David’s declaration: “I waited patiently for the Lord.”
Key Points:
- The Reality of the “Pit”: David describes his situation using heavy adjectives: a “horrible pit” and “miry clay” (slimy mud). Brother Joseph suggests these verses likely reflect David’s darkest moments, such as his severe illnesses, the loss of his child, the trauma within his family (Tamar), or the betrayal by his son Absalom.
- The “Waiting Room” Concept: Life is filled with waiting—for doctors, for loans, for marriage, or for healing. Brother Joseph emphasizes that while we cannot change God’s timing, we can change our attitude within the “waiting room.”
- Divine Verbs vs. Human Adjectives: While we focus on the “adjectives” of our misery (painful, slow, stuck), God introduces “verbs” of action. The text highlights five divine actions: He inclined (looked), heard, brought up (delivered), set (stood up), and established (fixed the path).
- The Value of the Process: God often uses the waiting period to change the believer rather than the circumstance. Brother Joseph shared a personal testimony regarding the martyrdom of his father; over 16 years, God shifted his prayer from a cry for “revenge” to a heart of “service” and “forgiveness” for his enemies.
Congregation response
Brother Joseph challenges the congregation to evaluate how they wait. The response should move from grumbling to “waiting patiently.”
Action Points:
- Reject the “Vegas” Mentality: Stop treating God like a slot machine where a prayer is “inserted” and an immediate answer is expected.
- Embrace Slow Growth: Just as the most delicious food is cooked slowly in an oven rather than a microwave, spiritual maturity requires time.
- Maintain a Joyful Spirit: The challenge is to remain joyful and continue worshipping even when the answer is delayed or when facing terminal illness.
- Trust the Timing: Recognize that God is the “God of Verbs” and will act at the correct moment to “set your feet upon a rock.”
