The Visit of the Magi

Brother Edward looks at the visit of the Magi at the birth of Jesus

The sermon focuses on Matthew 2:1-12, detailing the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus. Brother Edward highlights three distinct lessons drawn from their journey:

  • Spiritual Thirst: The Magi traveled thousands of kilometers from the East (specifically identifying Iran/Persia as a center of astrology) because they were “thirsty for the truth.” Unlike the religious leaders in Jerusalem who were only 36km away but remained indifferent, the Magi sacrificed months of travel to find the King.
  • Humility and Brokenness: Though they expected to find a king in a palace (Jerusalem), God led them to a humble manger in Bethlehem. The hercher emphasizes that God is “against the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
  • Total Dedication: The Magi presented specific gifts with prophetic significance:
    • Gold: Recognizing His Kingship.
    • Incense: Signifying His heavenly fragrance and worthiness of worship.
    • Myrrh: A bitter oil symbolizing His future suffering and sacrifice for mankind.

Brother Edward challenges the congregation to move beyond “religious” Christmas traditions (trees, gifts, and food) and seek a substantive spiritual transformation:

  • Self-Examination: Ask if you are truly “thirsty” for God or merely indifferent. Brother Edward asserts that Jesus invites those who are thirsty to drink from the “spring of life.”
  • The “New Way”: Just as the Magi returned by a different route to avoid Herod, anyone who truly meets Jesus cannot return to their old life. They must walk a “new path.”
  • Commitment to Rebirth: The congregation is invited to ey for a “new life” (spiritual rebirth), surrendering the “steering wheel” of their lives to Christ.
  • Action Point: Those who prayed for a new life are encouraged to share the news with the ministry team after the service to receive guidance on how to grow in their faith.
