Remembering Jesus

Christ death on the cross gives us life. Brother Edward reflects on the power of the resurrection.

Message:

The sermon centers on the profound exchange that occurred at the cross, primarily grounded in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Brother Edward emphasizes that the cross is the powerful core of the Gospel, mentioned 175 times in the New Testament and foreshadowed throughout the Old Testament.

Key theological points derived from the text include:

  • The Great Exchange: Whatever happened to Jesus on the cross, believers receive the exact opposite. He became sin so we could become righteous; He became a curse to give us blessing; He became poor to make us rich.
  • Substitutionary Atonement: Jesus took the “cup” of all human filth—jealousy, pride, lies, and immorality—from Adam to the end of the world, despite being sinless.
  • The Curse of the Law: Based on Galatians 3:13, explains that Jesus became a curse to free humanity from the curses of aimlessness, failure, fear, and broken relationships.
  • The Crown of Glory: While Jesus wore a crown of thorns (a symbol of the cursed earth), He did so to grant believers a crown of glory, making them “kings and priests” (Revelation 1:5-6).
  • Divine Isolation: Jesus experienced separation from the Father (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) so that humanity would never have to face isolation from God.

Brother Edward challenges the congregation to move beyond remembering the cross only during communion, calling for a daily lifestyle of “living under the cross.”

Action Points:

  • Self-Examination: Before taking communion, individuals must examine their hearts for obstacles, sins, or broken relationships.
  • Confession: Bring all identified sins and conflicts “under the blood of Jesus” for cleansing and reconciliation.
  • Submission to God’s Will: Acknowledge that while some things can be changed through prayer, others are part of God’s unchangeable plan. The congregation is urged to pray the prayer of St. Francis: for the strength to change what they can, the patience to accept what they cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference.
  • Victorious Living: Use the memory of the cross to fuel a deeper love for Christ and to live a victorious, rather than defeated, Christian life.
