Jesus parable of the fig tree

Elias speaks as an elder today exhorting those who have not gone regularly to Church to come back to Church

Worship:

Message:

The sermon centers on the rare “negative miracle” of Jesus cursing the fig tree, primarily found in Mark 11:12-14 and Matthew 21:18-22.

Brother Elias explains the biological context: in March/April (Passover season), fig trees in Jerusalem produce small edible buds before their large leaves appear. A tree covered in leaves but lacking these buds is deceptive, signaling it will bear no fruit. Jesus’ judgment of the tree serves as a spiritual metaphor for:

  • Religious Formality: Having the “leaves” of church attendance and tradition without the “fruit” of a transformed life.
  • Doctrine without Devotion: Possessing theological knowledge while lacking the Spirit of Christ, compassion, and holiness.
  • Regret vs. Repentance: Feeling sorrow during a sermon but failing to turn away from sin.
  • Intentions vs. Actions: Planning to serve God in the future while remaining inactive in the present.

Brother Elias challenges the congregation to move beyond “lip service” and decorative “leaves.”

  • Self-Examination: Members must search themselves to see if they have genuine faith and the “buds of holiness” in their daily lives.
  • Responsibility of Fellowship: Joining a church is a solemn commitment to be a partaker of divine grace, not a passive social club.
  • The Decision: Echoing Joshua’s declaration, the preacher calls for a clear choice: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
  • Action Points:
    • Prioritize holiness over religious performance.
    • Demonstrate faith through visible works, loyalty, and faithfulness.
    • Cease relying on self-will and submit to the Holy Spirit’s transformation.
    • Be accountable for church attendance and participation in the body of Christ.
