God’s word
Studying God’s word, how best to study the word of God.
Based on Hebrews 5:11 – 6:1.
Message:
Warning Against Falling Away
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14New International Version (NIV)
The sermon centers on Hebrews 5:11 – 6:12. Brother George explores the tension between spiritual infancy and maturity.
- Spiritual Stagnation: The text rebukes those who are “slow to learn.” Despite the time they have spent in the faith, they still require “milk” (elementary truths) rather than “solid food” (advanced spiritual insights).
- The Elementary Foundations: Six foundational principles are identified as the “milk” of the word:
- Repentance from acts that lead to death.
- Faith in God.
- Instructions about baptisms (specifically the three types: dying to sin/new birth, public water immersion, and baptism in the Spirit and fire).
- Laying on of hands.
- Resurrection of the dead.
- Eternal judgment.
- The Danger of Falling Away: Brother George addresses the sobering warning in Hebrews 6:4-6 regarding those who have “tasted the heavenly gift” and shared in the Holy Spirit but then fall away. He discusses the concept of apostasy and the difficulty of restoration when one willfully denies Christ.
Brother George presents a dual challenge to the congregation:
- Active Discernment: Like the Bereans in Acts 17, the congregation is charged to examine the scriptures daily to verify if what any preacher says is true. The responsibility for truth lies with the believer’s personal study.
- Pursuit of Telos (Maturity): The congregation is urged to move beyond the basics toward “perfection” or “maturity.” This is defined not as sinless perfection, but as “wholeness”—becoming exactly what God intended for one’s specific life stage (child, youth, or adult).
- Practical Discipline: A call to move past “two-minute” spiritual feedings. Brother George encourages a goal of 30 minutes of daily prayer and scripture reading, emphasizing direct communication with God over reliance on study notes.
- Trust in Future Grace: Using the illustration of Corrie Ten Boom and the heavy suitcases, the congregation is reminded that God provides the strength for life’s burdens only when they arrive, not in advance.
