Broken relationships
Michael Sookias shares a message on broken relationships and a Biblical approach to relationship restoration.
The sermon centers on the biblical cause and resolution of broken relationships, grounded in the fall of man and the subsequent inheritance of sin.
- Genesis 3 (The Fall): Disobedience in Eden led to the first broken relationship between man and God, followed by the first broken human relationship (Cain and Abel).
- Galatians 5:19-21: Sin is defined through “hatred, discord, jealousy, and selfish ambition,” which act as the root causes of relational friction.
- 1 John 4:20: Michael emphasizes that one cannot claim to love God while hating a brother; cutting off a relationship is equated to a lack of love.
- James 1:2-4: Trials and conflicts are to be “considered pure joy” because they develop perseverance and spiritual maturity.
- Matthew 13, Mark 4, Luke 8 (The Sower): The “good soil” requires three actions: Understanding (mind), Accepting (heart), and Persevering (feet).
Michael challenges the congregation to move away from the “secular legal model” of judging, sentencing, and executing punishment on others.
- Internal Audit: Identify one specific broken or “cooled” relationship. Instead of focusing on the other person’s sin, identify the sin within yourself (arrogance, expectations, or anger).
- Release Expectations: Relinquish unspoken expectations that pressure others. The preacher shared a personal example of releasing his wife from Christmas expectations to allow her space to grieve.
- The “Pencil Sharpener” Perspective: View difficult people as tools God uses to “sharpen” your character.
- The Rubbish Exchange: Treat Jesus as a “24/7 trash collector.” Be brutally honest about your sins, “package” them, and hand them over to Him to receive the “gifts of the Spirit” (peace, patience, kindness).
- Action: Do not leave the service without “doing business with God” regarding a specific conflict.
