This gathering served as a memorial service for Brother Don Rowley, a long-serving missionary to Pakistan and a foundational figure for the Iranian Christian Fellowship (ICF). The service, conducted in both English and Armenian, focused on Don’s legacy of faithfulness, his role as a spiritual father, and the biblical hope of the resurrection.

The service opened with a warm welcome to Don’s widow, June, and their family. Several members of the congregation shared how Don’s life directly impacted their own spiritual journeys:

• A Contagious Zeal: Participants recalled Don’s infectious enthusiasm for Pakistan, particularly the city of Peshawar. His dedication was described as “contagious,” inspiring others to learn about and care for the regions he served.
• Spiritual Fatherhood: Multiple speakers, including Alice and Parvaneh, identified Don as their “spiritual father.” They recounted arriving in the UK as young immigrants from Iran, feeling “orphaned” and alone, only to find a home and guidance through Don’s faithful ministry at the church in Ealing.
• A Firm but Humble Leader: Don was remembered for his “no-nonsense” approach to ministry and his deep humility. Despite his long journeys—often driving two and a half hours from Nottingham to London—he remained focused on the individuals he served rather than the size of the crowd.

The testimonies highlighted Don’s unique ability to bridge cultures. Though a “typical Englishman” living in a traditional English village, he fully immersed himself in Pakistani culture, often wearing national dress and evangelizing with great wisdom and love.

• Faithfulness in Small Beginnings: Charles noted that 25 years ago, the community consisted of only six or seven people meeting around a fire. Don stepped in to lead when the community lacked a pastor, continuing his service until a permanent pastor was appointed.
• Sacrificial Service: It was revealed that Don often took longer travel routes to pick up Pakistani families and bring them to church, demonstrating a practical, hands-on love.
• Final Days: Even in his final illness, Don remained focused on his “date with Pakistan” and was heard praising God on his deathbed, expressing total readiness to meet his Lord.

The service was anchored by scripture readings that provided a framework for the family’s grief and hope:

• The Victory Over Death: A reading from 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 emphasized the mystery of the resurrection, where the “perishable puts on the imperishable.” This passage served as a reminder that Don’s labor was “not in vain.”
• The New Jerusalem: A reading from Revelation 21:22-22:5 described the future glory of the New Jerusalem, where there is no night and God himself is the light.
• The Message of Romans: A written message from Reza Roshanzamir highlighted Don’s passion for the Book of Romans, particularly the assurance that “nothing can separate us from the love of Christ” and that in all sufferings, believers are “more than conquerors.”

Part 2 of 2: Message from Brother Sam

The sermon centers on Luke 6:46-49, where Jesus asks, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?” Brother Sam emphasizes that hearing the Word of God carries a heavy responsibility. He contrasts two types of builders:

• The Wise Builder: One who hears the Word and acts upon it, digging deep to lay a foundation on the rock. When the flood and torrents come, the house remains unshaken.
• The Foolish Builder: One who hears but does not act, building on the ground without a foundation. This house collapses immediately when struck by the storm.

Brother Sam also references Luke 6:27-38, highlighting the “outrageous” but possible commands of Christ: loving enemies, doing good to those who hate you, and giving without expecting anything in return.

The congregation is challenged to move beyond being “reactive” and instead become “proactive” in their faith, much like the late Brother Don Rowley.

• Take the Word Seriously: Do not develop “antibodies” against the truth. Hearing is insufficient; implementation is the metric of wisdom.
• Commit to the Process: Following Jesus is not easy and requires denying oneself and taking up the cross daily.
• Finish Well: The preacher warns against starting the “race” with a burst of energy only to fail at the end. The challenge is to maintain faithfulness and determination until the very finish.
• Proactive Kindness: Actively seek out those who are unlovely or considered “enemies” to show them the favor and mercy of God.
